About us

Innovations in engineering since 1952

For more than half a century, the Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) has delivered advanced electro-mechanical solutions to the U.S. Navy as well as the commercial nuclear power, oil and gas and industrial markets. A business of the EMS Division of Curtiss-Wright, we set a benchmark for excellence unmatched in the markets we serve, as we design, manufacture, test, deliver and support advanced products including:

  • Canned motor and shaft seal pumps
  • Motors
  • Generators
  • Propulsors
  • Mechanical seals
  • Control rod drive mechanisms

We partner with the world’s most demanding military, power generation, energy, process and industrial clients, delivering major technological advantages that often exceed specified performance levels while always meeting our hallmark for quality, reliability and safety.

A long legacy of performance with the Navy

From the birth of America’s nuclear Navy to the development of today’s state-of-the-art surface combatants, aircraft carriers and submarines, we’ve been providing defense systems for over 60 years. Back in 1952, our teams of engineers and technicians were charged with designing, manufacturing and qualifying pumps for USS Nautilus (SSN-571), the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine. Today, EMD continues to develop, design, and supply advanced solutions that are part of our nation’s defense.

An unparalleled reputation for quality and safety in nuclear power

EMD designed the pumps for Shippingport, our nation’s first commercial nuclear power plant. Today we manufacture reactor coolant pumps, motors, seals and control rod drive mechanisms that operate in electric power generation plants around the world. Capitalizing on our history with canned motor pump technology, EMD has developed the most advanced pump technology in the world for the Generation III+ nuclear power plants. This pump has been incorporated into the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor plant and is the design adopted by China for the next generation of nuclear plants.

EMD’s infrastructure is poised to forge America’s future energy growth initiatives. As utilities seek to extend plant life or build new facilities, they put their trust in EMD’s technical superiority and unmatched experience and knowledge.

We never stop innovating

EMD remains on the leading edge of technical innovation, with next generation products that include:

  • Advanced high speed generators
  • Marine integral motor/propulsors
  • Deep offshore subsea pump systems
  • Hazardous waste pump systems
  • High-Power electronic control and conditioning equipment

We were first to deliver a submerged canned electric motor and multi-phase pumping (i.e. liquid, gaseous and solid material) system for deep-sea oil recovery. Through every stage of EMD’s growth and development, our approach has remained the same – gain experience and insight; establish and maintain the highest standards of performance; focus on innovative thinking; design and deliver the world’s most reliable products; and never stop pushing the technological envelope to create new possibilities for our customers every day.
